Sorry to report this tail does not have a happy ending. As Rover eagerly anticipates the arrival of his master and an opening of the gate---a gate to the bitch in heat. A mean little boy is sneaking along the fence with a hammer and nail in hand! Damn it hurts just to think about it.
And then there are better uses for the ole knothole!
Yes, they even made a song about the ole knothole that some of us ole farts remember.
